We offer a range of support for the right individuals to gain their qualification for registration purposes. The qualification will demonstrate you have skills and knowledge to carry out your role, will support your career, increase your confidence, and improve your professional practice.

 

Support to gain Scottish Social Services Council Registration

For some roles you will be required to hold registration with the Scottish Social Services Council, known as the SSSC for many of our roles. Being registered with the Scottish Social Services Council  means you are part of a professional workforce. As a registered professional, there is a requirement that you obtain the appropriate qualification for the role e.g., SVQ 2 in Health and Social Care, within a set timescale, which we will support you to achieve.

West Lothian are committed to supporting the professional development of its staff and are committed to the Newly Qualified Social Workers Supported Year.

The purpose of the Newly Qualified Social Worker Supported Year is to ensure you are given the right level of support and opportunities to build on the learning you have achieved to date.  This means you are given protected time to consolidate learning, a protected case load, provision of a mentor and access to support to help you complete your year of Continuous Professional Learning.

The learning in your first year as a Newly Qualified Social Worker will be aligned to the needs and requirements of your role, team and service as well as the wider Health and Social Care Partnership. West Lothian Council is committed to supporting its social work staff to achieve their required Continuous Professional Learning requirements through the provision of ongoing learning and development opportunities. 

Here in West Lothian, we have a dedicated Practice Learning Lead who oversees our Employer Support responsibilities. As such you can look forward to a high level of support and guidance from them alongside your team and the wider Health and Social Care Partnership.

Q. Will I get an induction?

A. Yes the induction programme would be sent to successful candidates ahead of start date.

 

Q. Do I need to be able to drive?

A. For some roles, particularly community based jobs, yes you do, as you will be travelling throughout West Lothian. 

 

Q. Do I need to have SVQ Level II for care roles?

A. No, we offer training on the job.

 

Q Is there an option for flexible working?

A.  We offer a variety of flexible work options to suit individuals where appropriate. If you are studying, have family, caring or other responsibilities, we can enable you to combine these commitments with your work. We are looking for caring people to join us. Not all our roles require a formal qualifications to apply, so don't worry if you haven't done this before. We do offer support for the right people to achieve their qualifications on the job.

 

Q. Do I get paid an allowance for working evenings and weekends?

A. Depending on your role and place of work, the current shift allowance is 14% for evenings and weekends and 17.5% for waking night shift.

 

Q. What are the shift times?

A. They vary depending on the number of hours you are contracted for. 

 

Q. Do I need to work on Public Holidays?

A. If it is a working day for you then you would be expected to work.
