West Lothian Women's Aid (WLWA)

Overview of Service

WLWA was established in 1980 and remains the sole charitable organisation in West Lothian working to support women and children experiencing domestic abuse. The charity provides a range of specialist domestic abuse and trauma informed support services to empower people to move on from their experiences and rebuild their lives free from abuse.

We are a service user-led organisation and adhere strongly to a values-based ethos of Safety, Honesty and Empowerment which is entrenched in all of the work that we do. We provide a range of services which include Helpline Support and face to face appointments, Temporary Safe Accommodation (including self-contained options), Resettlement support, Outreach services, a specialist Independent Domestic Abuse Advocacy Service, Bespoke Counselling Support and a range of peer support Group work options including The Freedom Programme and Own My Life for adults and the DART and CEDAR Programme for Women, Children and Young People. We also offer a dedicated Children and Young person's support service (including holiday activity programmes (and liaise closely with schools as part of our preventive work).

West Lothian Women's Aid offers a range of learning and development opportunities for partners organisations around Safeguarding and Domestic abuse. We also offer 'Safe & Together', Core 4 training, which was first developed in the US. This model provides an internationally recognised suite of tools and interventions designed to help child welfare professionals improve their awareness and understanding of domestic abuse. This training focuses on keeping children safe while supporting the non-offending parent and holding perpetrators accountable. The training provides practical tools and a common language to improve decision-making and collaboration across agencies. WLWA are now a certified institute to provide this training and are proud to offer this opportunity to other organisations who may find this beneficial to their work.
